Western Victoria Primary Health Network (WVPHN) is available to help practices register with and manage staff access to the Australian Government's My Health Record system
Once a practice is registered to take part in the online My Health Record system, individual healthcare providers can be authorised to access the system on the organisation’s behalf through conformant software.
In addition to helping practices to register with My Health Record (MyHR), WVPHN can also support practices to:
- identify their team members' roles and responsibilities
- develop policies and procedures for accessing the system
- identify available staff training programs.

Implementing My Health Record at your practice
Using My Health Record (MyHR) in your practice is an effective way to improve access to information for both your providers, and your patients. It is important to make sure you follow best practices and processes to ensure you meet the requirements and regulations, whilst also ensuring they all of your staff are effectively trained in using My Health Record as part of their everyday workflows.

Better and Faster Access for My Health Record
Background
The Australian Government is making changes to provide better and faster access to pathology and diagnostic imaging reports in My Health Record. The changes have been introduced in response to recommendations of the Strengthening Medicare Taskforce Report, to modernise primary care and were announced in May 2023 by the Hon Mark Butler MP, Minister for Health and Ageing. These changes also respond to patients’ demands for improved access to and greater control over their health information, to enable them to more effectively manage their health.
Better Access
As of June 2026, Pathology and diagnostic imaging providers will be the first healthcare providers required to share test results to My Health Record, unless otherwise stipulated by the provider or patient. These changes will ensure patients and their healthcare providers have better and faster access to key health information when and where it is needed.
Faster Access
As of October 2025, patients can access more of their own pathology and diagnostic imaging results through the 1800Medicare app as soon as they are uploaded, or after a 5-day delay for some specific tests.
Who helped to inform these changes?
A committee known as the Clinical Reference Group was established by the Agency and the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing to provide strategic advice and clinical oversight to support safe implementation of these reforms. It had 24 members from relevant peak bodies, professional associations, consumer groups (including people with lived experience) and other stakeholders involved in pathology and diagnostic imaging services. It was chaired by prominent clinicians from the Agency and the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care.
